A Fond Farewell To Linda As She Retires PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 05 October 2012 07:37
In August, Step It Up, Inc. bid farewell to Linda McNeill, Step It Up, Inc.’s co-founder and Executive Director. Linda has led the organization since 2003 and, in that time, the organization has grown and made a true impact on the youth it serves.

Step It Up, Inc. started with a pilot Internship Program in 2004 in response to Portland youth’s lack of access to professional career opportunities. Linda brought to her office her educational background in architecture, community economic development, and public policy.

Under Linda’s leadership, the organization has grown and its work continues to show impressive results. Program participants make true inroads to achieving their career and education goals. Our results are impressive: 100% graduate high school, 100% attend college, and 35% are hired by their internship site.

As the organization plans its next steps, our programs continue to be grounded in current youth engagement and education trends and our youth will be served by programs that engaged and involve them as future business leaders and successful adults.

We would like to thank Linda for her passion and vision in creating SIU and thank you for your continued support of our youth.

Sincerely,
Step It Up, Inc. Board of Directors

Career Club Summer Update PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 July 2012 00:00

Career Club at Linfield College School of NursingSummer at Step It Up means site visits and this year we have a full schedule for our Career Club. Yesterday kicked off the tours, starting at Linfield College's School of Nursing in downtown Portland.

Not only did they get to see the campus, but they also got to hear from two current students at the school. A great opportunity since many of our youth are interested in medical careers!

The best part of the tour? For one of the Career Club participants, it was when "we got to view students working with the Resusci Annie (a training mannequin) and finding out what was wrong with them. They can even make them pregnant, but they said you don't want to be here for baby day!"

What a fun way to spend the day and learn about nursing!

You can check out pictures from tour and from other tours this summer on Step It Up's Facebook Page.

Learning to Love Writing PDF Print E-mail

Summer has officially started. With high schools out last week, many teens are taking a break and enjoying their free time, but for the youth in the summer Career Club, they spent their first Monday out of school participating in Career Club's first workshop of the summer: Creative Writing presented by Charlotte Rains Dixon, a writer and blogger helping others create a successful writing life.

Here's, in her words, her experience last Monday:DSC00133_a

"I spent Monday afternoon leading a creative writing workshop for a small group of teenagers, as part of an amazing non-profit I volunteer for called Step It Up.  (They connect underserved teens with career and college opportunities.)   The kids were all around the age of eighteen, and exuberant, typical teens."

After beginning the session by asking if they liked writing, and receiving several no answers, the teens impressed Charlotte with their dedication and concentration.

Working Hard at the Groundhog Day Job Shadow
Friday, 10 February 2012 13:39

''That was the best day of my life!''Watch the Groundhog Day Video

That was the first thing Giovanni said after returning from his job shadow at Wieden+Kennedy. Giovanni, along with 12 other youth, participated in the first annual Groundhog Day Job Shadow on February 2nd and 3rd, and as you can tell, had a great time.

It wasn't easy though: youth were required to participate in a 2 hour training on Thursday evening, had to be present at 8:00 on Friday morning (a no school day for those in the Portland Public School District), and after the job shadow they attended a recap with the rest of the group. The training, led by Step It Up volunteer Lea McLeod, covered topics like how to act professionally in the workplace, what questions to ask, and how to dress appropriately. Following Thursday's training, youth met at the Lloyd Center on Friday morning then headed out to their job shadow sites, impressing the businesses.
